Finance studies, books and bring a smile on a face
“If you think of life as like a big pie, you can try to hold the whole pie and kill yourself trying to keep it, or you can slice it up and give some to the people around you, and you still have plenty left for yourself.”
This is the way Jay Leno, an American well known comedian and the host of the TV talk show spoke humorously about a very serious topic of sharing your life with others. Sounds like God is speaking? Maybe so. Actually It is all about helping those around you. Let’s look at the financial side of it. Let’s say your financial affairs at the end of the month let you save $200 towards your summer holiday. Yet, you know that your neighbor’s son is a student who goes hungry most of the time since his parents don’t have enough finances to transfer to him for living. So he kills himself working nights on a meager income, trying to finance both his studies, his books and somehow make a living. You are so much better off financially than he is. Why don’t you bring a smile to his face by helping him. You can be sure that if you help others God will in turn help you. Ask, and it shall be given you. Pray for those needing jobs worldwide. Pray for those without food today. Pray for those without clean water and medicine or even basic shelter and security.
The power in helping others
Now let’s look briefly at Carlos Slim Helu, the world’s second richest man. He is even ranked ahead of Bill Gates. What does he do with his wealth? Keep it all to himself? Well, actually he is known to lead a modest life, no big new cars, yachts, or private jets. He is a philanthropist who uses his financial control over the market to help others. Does he do it out of his exceptional faith in God? Who knows, who cares. But look at the money he transfers to the charity causes. Being the founder of the foundation Fundación Telmex, his last money transfer of $4 billion to the foundation has demonstrated him to be among the world’s greatest givers as mentioned by the Forbes. Does he help others? You bet. There are so many church organizations, missionary causes, hungry, dying children in Africa so many financial opportunities to help. Transfer your money today and you will not only be satisfied with yourself but at the time of your need God will also come to your aid. How? Maybe through your neighbor, friend, another human being that He created in His image.
There is an important principle in the giving. It’s easily overlooked by some namely if we hold on to our possessions too tightly we may lose them. Those who understand this principle will be open to helping their neighbors with money gift, whether it is a paycheck or financial transfer. There are people whose lives demonstrate this type of ethics.
Well, you may say it is all fine but we live at the time of economic and financial crises. While it is all true why do we buy so many unnecessary items? On the top of that we use our credit cards to purchase consumer goods that depreciate quickly such as a television or appliances. More than often we really don’t need a new TV set and the credit we use overwhelms us with interest rates, user fees and credit terms. Why wouldn’t your old TV set serve you for another 6 months until you can pay with cash and exchange your interest rates for a nice money gift for somebody whose livelihood could be affected by it in the measure you couldn’t even imagine.
God does help
Another worthwhile consideration would be this: perhaps instead of investing into the stock market it is better to invest into people around you. From the history we understand that the Great Depression of 1929 was not caused by the bank failures but by the stock market crash. We are facing greater risk of the crash than in 1929. So again exchanging your financial assets into small risk free donations may in time act as a protective shield for the rest of your finances. How? You know the answer. God will help those who help others.
Perhaps we should look at this as an exchange or bartering system. You help others, God helps you. You transfer the funds to the needy, God transfers His prosperity, health, blessing to you. Isn’t this the way the marketing was initiated? The exchange of personal possessions of value for other goods you want, or need is barter. This is the history of commerce. Then try this system of exchange. Find somebody you can help today and wait for the results. You may be surprised.
